Following the success of her acclaimed Essence Baroque album in 2022, featuring solo baroque violin and harpsichord, Judy Hung now presents Essence Romantique, an album performed on historic pianos from the Romantic period, including instruments by Broadwood (1823), Graf (1826), and Erard (1866).
These pianos are part of the Richard Burnett Collection of historic keyboard instruments, managed by the Finchcocks Charity in the UK. Carefully selected for their ability to offer authentic interpretations, these pianos bring forth the rich sonorities of the Romantic era, allowing for a deeper, more nuanced performance.
Judy Hung has chosen works by Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, and Brahms, each showcasing the expressive romanticism of nineteenth-century music and revealing the exceptional sound of these rare instruments. By performing on different pianos from the era, Essence Romantique offers contemporary listeners—accustomed to Romantic repertoire performed on modern pianos—a fresh, original listening experience that transports them back to the sound world of the 19th century.
