SIG.r CANABY
All flute sonatas by M. Fr. Cannabich

Lorenzo Gabriele’s first album of sonatas for traverso and basso continuo has come to light in 2024. This project, which required months (if not years) of study and devotion, is dedicated to the mysterious personality of Martin Friedrich Cannabich, one of the founding fathers of the so-called Mannheim School during the first half of the 18th century, who has been unjustly ignored to this day.
Those who know Gabriele better know how much interest he takes in researching and rediscovering forgotten composers and their works that have remained unperformed for centuries – in an attempt to enrich the repertoire of the transverse flute – and how he is committed to the music conceived in Mannheim from the early 18th century onwards. Therefore, this disc contains all this and is the coronation of a journey that has lasted years, made up of experiments, verifications, long reflections, and leaps of imagination.
FROM THE BOOKLET
At a historical moment when the transverse flute – a relatively recent ‘creation’ of that time – came to the limelight as one of the most fashionable instruments, many musicians, some of the most influential, began to devote themselves to it compositionally as well as exploring and expanding its technical limits and thus producing a considerable number of solo and chamber pieces, in which the instrument had the opportunity to showcase its new expressive potential.
M. F. Cannabich’s Sonatas offer us moments of brilliance and ironic theatricality, perfectly in tune with the spirit of their time and rightfully belonging alongside the work of composers of the highest calibre such as Blavet, Buffardin, Ferrandini, Locatelli, Hasse or Quantz, where the transverse flute is no longer exclusively synonymous with lyricism, but an instrument capable of remarkable technical skill and powerful expressiveness.
The present recording production is to be considered as the first chapter of a complex, multi-stage project which aims at expanding the known repertoire of the transverse flute through the rediscovery and reproposition of minor composers and forgotten works.

“This is one of the cases where one wonders why it has taken so long before this repertoire has been recorded. These sonatas are top of the bill and deserve to be part of the standard repertoire. Lorenzo Gabriele and his colleagues deserve praise for their decision to record them.”
“What makes this disc even more important is the way Cannabich’s sonatas are performed. (…) This is all brilliantly done.”
“In my view, this is one of the most interesting and compelling recordings of baroque flute music of recent years.”
