Composed during Bach’s time as court composer for Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen in 1720, the Six Solos for violin single-handedly established the instrument’s technical and musical capabilities. The size and scope of these pieces was unprecedented for the time, and over three hundred years later they remain a pinnacle of accomplishment for any violinist.
Violinist Jubal Fulks has been performing these works on the street in Colorado mountain towns, collecting stories from chance interactions as people encounter this magnificent historical music outside of the concert hall. He is also writing about the importance of this music and its connection to humanity, as well as philosophical aspects of playing music conceived in such a different time and place. The concerts will be divided into two parts: “The Sonatas” and “The Partitas,” which will allow for an immersive journey through these musical works of art.
