Santa Fe Pro Musica presents 39th Season
Santa Fe, NM– Santa Fe Pro Musica’s 2020-21 season is filled with all the elements our audiences know and love. The season begins and ends with string quartet concerts, includes the popular Christmas and Holy Week concerts in the Loretto Chapel, and presents the Pro Musica Orchestra and prominent soloists in three pairs of concerts. Santa Fe Pro Musica’s season also includes youth concerts, lectures, demonstrations, master classes, and post-concert dinners with the artists to share our love of music with the community.
Orchestra Series in the Lensic Performing Arts Center and St. Francis Auditorium
—Colin Jacobsen returns as violin soloist and leader in the first orchestral concert, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, December 29 and 30 in St. Francis Auditorium. The concert opens with Telemann’s brilliantly imaginative Burlesque de Quixotte, with its vibrant musical paintings of battling windmills, plodding donkeys, and a would-be princess.
Jacobsen is joined by Stephen Redfield, SFPM’s concertmaster, for Bach’s beloved Concerto in D Major for Two Violins. Jacobsen also plays Vivaldi’s enchanting The Four Seasons, a set of violin concertos.
—A New Era, January 30 and 31 at the Lensic Performing Arts Center, presents Pro Musica’s Artistic Director Designate, Anne-Marie McDermott, in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25 in C Major, K. 503, “Olympian.” The History of Red, composed by Reena Esmail with lyrics taken from a poem by Linda Hogan (Chickasaw), features soprano Kathryn Mueller in its world premiere. The piece was co-commissioned by Pro Musica and three other orchestras. Haydn’s celebratory Symphony No. 97 in C Major opens the concert. Thomas O’Connor conducts.
— Haydn’s spectacular oratorio The Creation concludes the Orchestra Series on April 24 and 25 as O’Connor again takes the podium. Written for orchestra, choir, and vocal soloists, it is considered Haydn’s masterpiece. Inspired by the Book of Genesis and Milton’s Paradise Lost, The Creation is truly a Grand Finale!
String Works Series in St. Francis Auditorium
This season, Pro Musica’s popular String Works Series features the world-class Dover, St. Lawrence, and Castalian String Quartets and Cuarteto Casals on November 22, January 10, March 7, and May 1.
Loretto Chapel Series
—During the Christmas holidays, December 19–24, the Baroque Ensemble performs music by the baroque masters and traditional carols to sold out crowds in the festively decorated Loretto Chapel.
—On April 9– 11, the Diderot Quartet commemorates the joys and sorrows of the Easter season with Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ.
Mary G. Madigan, Executive Director: “We’re excited to share plans for next season: the scope of programs and the new collaboration with Anne-Marie McDermott, our Artistic Director Designate! You’ll notice that our season starts later than usual, in November with the Dover Quartet, and builds to a grand event, Haydn’s The Creation, in April. Until then we’ll continue to nurture our shared love of music. Stay tuned for innovations to come!”
Anne-Marie McDermott, Artistic Director Designate: “There is an artistic aesthetic in Santa Fe—a commitment to collaboration and the wholeness of the human being—that has spoken to me since my very first visit. I look forward to building on the remarkable organization Tom [O’Connor] and Carol [Redman] have created, bringing new voices and ideas to Santa Fe so that we can provide unforgettable musical experiences for members of our community.”
