Con Gioia Early Music Ensemble, directed by Preethi de Silva, will present at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday March 2, 2024, a concert of Bach’s vocal music and Georg Philipp Telemann’s Paris Quartet, no. 10. The event will be in the Throop Hall at the Throop Unitarian Universalist Church, 300 S. Los Robles Avenue, Pasadena, CA, 91101, and concludes the ensemble’s 42nd season. This special concert is co-sponsored by the Colburn Foundation.
The program will feature Bach’s famous Coffee Cantata, rendered in an English translation and presented in a semi-staged version; it also includes Bach’s duet (Aria #3) from his cantata “Wachet auf… (Sleepers awake…), BWV 140. The ensemble will also perform one of Telemann’s famous Paris Quartets. Our featured artists will include once more two outstanding local singers, soprano Andrea Zomorodian and baritone John Buffet as well as Stephen Schultz, the highly acclaimed baroque flautist. They will be supported on period instruments by two more outstanding musicians performing obbligato (solo) parts: Katherine Kyme, baroque violinist; William Skeen, ’cellist/viola da gambist; and Preethi de Silva, harpsichordist/director, as well as other string players.
