Atlanta Baroque Orchestra Celebrates All-Star Season Finale in April

ATLANTA, April 10, 2023 —The Atlanta Baroque Orchestra celebrates the All-Star Season finale on April 21st-23rd in Atlanta, Roswell, and Savannah. Guest Director Evan Few leads the orchestra in Triple Play, a memorable program of concertos by J.S. Bach and Antonio Vivaldi. The final concert of the series is also the ABO’s first performance in Savannah, Georgia.

ABO Artistic Director Julie Andrijeski remarks, “We’re excited to end our season with a blockbuster program of concertos for diverse instruments featuring several ABO players. ABO’s Associate Concertmaster is our Guest Director and violin soloist for an exquisite rendering of Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor. Anna Marsh, a leading baroque bassoonist in the U.S., has chosen to play one of Vivaldi’s most vivid bassoon concertos, in E minor. Harpsichordist Adam Jaffe will bring down the house with Bach’s popular harpsichord concerto in D minor.”

Andrijeski adds, “We are very pleased to expand our musical reach this year to Savannah, Georgia. Artistic Director Thomas White graciously invited the Orchestra to participate in the Bach Ascending series there, and we were overjoyed to accept!” Bach Ascending honors the music of J.S. Bach (1685-1750) through performances featuring extraordinary artists from around the world. The organization seeks to spread a joyful understanding of the timeless beauty, complexity, and accessibility of Bach’s music in today’s modern settings.

Evan Few, an established leader in historical performance, shares his inspiration for Triple Play, “When planning the music program, my mind went immediately to a celebration of virtuosity. What better way to highlight ABO’s trademark verve and joy in music-making?”

“The three solo concertos on our program are popping with instrumental fireworks, and exploit the specific colors and capabilities of their instruments.” Few continues, “Also, each celebrates the inherent virtuosity of the band, giving the tutti players an equal voice in dialogue with the soloist. And Vivaldi’s Concerti for Strings provide the ideal platform for the band to shine. It’s precisely that corporal virtuosity, shared excitement and revelry I most wanted to highlight in Triple Play.”

The name Triple Play is a nod to the season’s All-Star theme inspired by the Atlanta Braves’ 2021 Championship. Like all winning teams, the Orchestra is an ensemble of individual superstars who perform together seamlessly.

The Atlanta Baroque Orchestra presents Triple Play at 7:30pm on April 21st in Atlanta, 3:00pm on April 22nd in Roswell, as well as a special engagement in the Bach Ascending series at 6:00pm on April 23rd in Savannah, Georgia. Tickets may be purchased online in advance; a limited quantity will be available at the door. Prices range from $15-$50. The Savannah performance is free of charge, but requires a reservation.
