Taking a comprehensive approach to questions of diversity and cultural sensitivity, Bloomington Early Music Festival shifted programming strategies to focus on under-represented groups in musical culture and music making with their 2022 festival, addressing a specific theme each year. BLEMF director Suzanne Ryan-Melamed will lead a discussion centered on the practical complexities of such a shift: expanding the traditional canon without abandoning it, mismatches between requirements of grant funding and the demands and tastes of donors and audiences, representation without tokenism, and other challenges.
