About

Baroque Music Montana specializes in chamber music inspired by history. Baroque Music Montana (BaMM) performs works by celebrated composers of the Baroque, as well as many pieces rarely or not heard since the eighteenth century. Some manuscripts are readily available in digital archives, and some require a great deal of sleuthing to unearth. BaMM’s musician roster rotates based on desired instrumentation for repertoire performed in intimate spaces similar to which the music was originally intended, and often on period instruments. Using historical instruments and referencing original manuscripts, iconography, and historical writing fuels commitment to the music and inspires fresh interpretation. Rather than recreating something old, the aim is to make each performance of this day, of this space, existing because of these musicians and this audience.

Based in Bozeman, BaMM provides a performance platform for local artists who love baroque music, visiting professionals who have deeply invested in historical performance, and students interested in the style. BaMM’s musician roster rotates based on desired instrumentation for repertoire and has included violinist Rachel Podger, cellist Phoebe Carrai, countertenor Reggie Mobley, and manyother excellent national and international artists. Performances are often in intimate spaces similar to which the music was originally intended, with an emphasis on rural locations and artistically or hsitorically meaningful venues from Nashua to Shepher to Big Sandy.

The group has also appeared on series in Seattle, Spokane, Syracuse, Ottawa, and Quebec and in colaboration with such organizations as Intermountain Opera Bozeman, the Yellowstone Art Museum, Billings Symphony, Phillipsburg Theatre, Coulter Museum of Art, Bozeman Art Museum, UM and MSU, and Bitterroot Baroque in creative programming serving Montna through outreach, house, and public concerts, outdoor performances, lectures, masterclasses, and an annual Period Performance Workshop. BaMM recently released an album to acclaimed review, was featured in articles in early music’s national publication EMAg, and is looking forward to performances at Tippet Rise in fall 2024.

Made possible through a grant from The Juilliard School’s Alan D. Marks Center for Career Services and Entrepreneurship, the umbrella of Baroque Music Montana was founded in 2015 by Carrie Krause to provide a meaningful cultural institution of intimate, communicative, progressive performance for our vibrant community.
